Brief Summary
Nicaragua is the second poorest country in Latin America after Haiti. It suffered greatly during the civil war between the Sandinistas and the Contras in the 70’s and 80’s. The government is newly under the Sandinista government of Daniel Ortega.
National Ministry
The ministry in Nicaragua was actually started by Humberto del Arca, the leader of the association of churches and Extension Bible Institute on the North Coast of Honduras. In 2000, a student of Humberto's ministry, Rigoberto Reyes, left Honduras to start planting churches in Nicaragua. Rigoberto is part Honduran and part Nicaraguan. In his first 8 years of working in Nicaragua, Rigoberto planted 9 churches among the poor, and especially among those with a “difficult past” such as alcoholism, drugs, or prostitution – people with whom no other church in Nicaragua wants to work. There is also a carpentry shop and welding school where "at risk" youth, who have no job or particular skill, can learn a trade and thus be able to provide for their family instead of stealing.
