Brief Summary
Honduras is located in Central America. It is situated between Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua. The tropical climate of this region produces lush and beautiful landscapes along with incredible vegetation. It is also known as the classic banana republic, not only for its exportation of bananas, but also due to its politics being controlled by the Dole and Chiquita fruit companies over the past 150 years. The country also has many "maquilas" or sweat shops, that produce mainly textiles. It is also the second largest exporter of clothing to the US after China. In 1998, the country was devastated by Hurricane Mitch where more than 20,000 people lost their lives or are still missing, and millions were left homeless.
National Ministry
The ministry on the North Coast was started in the 1950’s by George Patterson using the extension Bible institute system to train and evangelize rural Hondurans. Since 1981, Humberto del Arca has been the director of HEBI, the Honduras Extension Bible Institute. There are now over 200 churches in the north coast region of Honduras. Some churches are so remote that they have no roads, and they can only reached by a 5 hour journey on foot or horseback. Churches minister to Latinos as well as the Garifuna people, descended from escaped slaves in the Caribbean centuries ago.
