Brief Summary
The Republic of Guatemala is a country in Central America. It is located in the southern end of North America. It is bordered by Mexico to the North and uniquely situated between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Guatemala has a rich and distinctive history stemming from its roots in both Spanish and native Mayan culture. In 1960, the country was plunged into a civil war between military governments, right-wing vigilante groups, and leftist rebels that would last 36 years, the longest civil war in Latin American history. The indigenous Mayan Indians were singled out for special brutality by the right-wing death squads. By the end of the war, 200,000 citizens were dead.
National Ministry
The ministry in Guatemala was started by Otto de la Cruz in 1992. After three years of ministering in Belize, he decided to come back to his homeland and start a “chain of churches” in Guatemala, evangelizing door to door and sharing the gospel to those who society has given up on. The ministry in Guatemala has grown tremendously in the last 16 years. More than 30 churches have been planted in poor urban areas of Guatemala City, the jungle of Petén, and in rural areas close to the Mexican border. Furthermore, more that 400 pastors and leaders have been trained by the national association. Their current vision is to have a Seminary where they will continue to train and equip their leaders to better reach out to their communities.
